Prom Hair: Take One

Amanda's prom is this Saturday, so this past Sunday, Kate tried out different make-up looks on her, while I tried hairstyles. I knew what she wanted from photos she has been sending me for some time, but I really wasn't sure how I was going to pull it off. We bought a Con Air bun accessory (used instead of a sock bun) and as I separated her hair (she has a LOT of hair), I tried my best to duplicate the bun. After a few failed attempts, Kate looked it up. Here is a great tutorial on how to really do it. Forget the instructions on the package.

After separating her hair from the bottom up, I started the foundation of the style with the bun. I made a part at her crown (just above her ears) and created the low bun you can see on the bottom. Then I decided three layers of curls should do it. The first would disguise the bun, the second would start to look like the style, and the third would finish it off. I used a 2-1/2" curling iron and wrapped 2" sections of hair around the barrel (don't use the clamp, just use the barrel) and wrapped the hair away from her face.

Once that was done, I started to pin pieces of hair around, above, and below the bun. It looks pretty messy at this point. I also used a lot of bobby pins. Don't worry about seeing the pins as you work on the first layer. Taking down another section, I just repeated what I did and building up the hair as I went.

When it's time for the final layer, I made sure to hide any remaining visible bobby pins and I made sure any new pins were completely hidden. This is the final result.

And here is the top. I made her walk around and bob her head a bit so we were all certain nothing would fall out. From start to finish, it took me 1 hour and 20 minutes!

Watch for the real thing next week!
